(2) - Film Review of X-Men: First Class - Information list about the Characters

In the previous post, I talked about the plot of the movie and about the movie itself. But in this post, I'm going to talk about the characters of the movie and their powers and abilities.

Professor X or Charles Xavier (James McAvoy): A powerful telepathic who can read minds and also a clairvoyant. He decided to join a team with the mutants that he and Erik were detecting. His aim is to stop the strategy that Shaw and his team were planning. 

Magneto or Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender): As a young boy, Erik knew he was different from the others and after a short while he discovered he had an ability with controlling magnetism. After he’s grown up, he forms a friendship a Charles and creates a plan to save the world from Shaw.

Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon): Sebastian, an evil mutant who is a Nazi collaborator. His abilities are: absorbing energy and re-channel the absorbed energy. His plans are to start a war so the mutants can rule the earth.

Emma Frost (January Jones): A beautiful blonde mutant with magnificent powers: telepathic and also possess a diamond-like skin that is impossible to destroy. She’s one of Shaw’ team.

Beast or Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult): He’s a scientist with few mutant powers. He creates and drank some particular chemicals which resulted in unleashing a ‘Beast’.

Mystique or Raven Darkholme (Jennifer Lawrence): A good friend of Charles Xavier but at the end we see that she decides to choose different ways which leads her to evil. Her power is shape-shifting. She can shape-shift into anyone she wants.

Angel Salvadore (Zoe Kravitz): An ex-dancer, with insect-like wings tattoo which become real wings. She also has another cool power which is lethal: spitting acid.

Havok or Alex Summers (Lucas Till): Alex can eject energy waves which cause flames. He learned the full control of his powers with the aid of Charles Xavier.

Reptide (Alejandro Gonzalez): Always following his leader, Shaw, he creates a small masses of air rotating quickly which are called whirlwinds that destroy everything. It is very powerful.

Azazel (Jason Flemying): He has a figure of a demon which can teleport. He’s on Shaw’s side.

Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne): A CIA agent. She is one of the few humans that knows about the mutants and their powers, she follows Charles Xavier, so she can work with them and finds out what is going to happen between the good and the evil mutants.

(2) - Film Review of X-Men Class

Hey guys. My name is Eman Hersey and this blog is about a film review. The film that I'm going to be reviewing is X-Men: First Class which is one of my favourite movies. This blog is created for my school assignment, so I hope you will like it.

The Summary of the Movie:

In the beginning of the film, we see a young boy revealing his magnetic powers in 1944. Erik Lensherr (the same boy with the magnetic powers) is grown up and plans to kill Sebastian Shaw because he was the one who killed his mother, so Erik wanted revenge on him. After a short period of time, he meets another mutant Charles Xavier, the one that met Mystique when he was a little boy and became good friends. When Erik Lensherr and Charles Xavier met, they also become best friends and their job was to find new mutants like them to teach them how to control their powers. But not all of the mutants were good. In fact, some of the evil mutants were: Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost, Azazel and more. Their evil intention is to start a nuclear war to destroy the world and increase their abilities and rule the world.

Reviewing the Movie:

This movie has been officially rated 3 stars. There were some critics stating that the movie was a bit long and that there were some difficult moments in the dialogue such as not understanding some words that were said. But I would like to mention the good stuff about the movie such as: there is good action involved. It kept on the same old theme that all the 'X-Men trilogy', 'X-Men: Origins', 'X-men TV series' and the comics have. And last but not least, the whole cast was excellent, especially when it comes to the main co-stars which are James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender.

X-men: First Class filming began on the 31st August 2010 in Oxford, England and was released on the 1st June 2011. This movie's budget was between $140 and $160 million.

Evaluation - My Opinion

In my opinion, this movie was excellently filmed, including the script and the acting. If I would compare it with other superheroes movie, I would still choose this one because of the fact that I saw all the other X-Men movies, including all the episodes and the story keeps on going from one movie to the other and can be easily understood. Not to mention the actions. I think that it has a good action scenes in it. I also would like to emphasise on some characters that in my opinion were very good such as: 'Emma Frost' (January Jones). Her acting was very realistic and good. Even 'Mystique' (Jennifer Lawrence) was brilliant, especially those scenes when we see her shape-shifting. Although the shape-shifting was computer made, it was really good on her. I think that every actor and actress made their part really efficient and I wouldn't trade one actor with the other for sure !

Beast/Hank McCoy (Nicholas Hoult): Hank is a brilliant scientist with only a few mutant features until a serum unexpectedly unlocks the superhuman Beast within.

Moira MacTaggert (Rose Byrne): A female CIA agent in the 1960s - a time when female operatives were very few in number. After Moira becomes among the first humans to witness the powers of mutants, she tracks down Charles Xavier, who helps Moira convince her superiors of the existence of mutants and a general understanding of  working with them for the greater good.

Darwin/ Armondo Munoz (Edi Gathegi): Through 'reactive evolution,' Darwin can adapt to any situation or environment. Sudden underwater, he grows gills; in the dead of night, he gains night vision.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this exciting X-Men prequel/origin story has plenty of action as the heroes and villains battle it out using their wide variety of special abilities, many of which can be deadly. Though overall the film's story goes to the 1960s setting, there are big explosions and attacks, as well as hand-to-hand battles and a few intense death scenes -- including one in which a boy's mother is killed in front of him and another in which a coin becomes a lethal weapon. The threat of nuclear war hangs over most of the movie. Expect moderate drinking and smoking; female characters sometimes appear in their underwear, skimpy costumes, or less, though there's no actual nudity. Language is infrequent but in a particular scene, there's being use a word which isn't appropriate to post. The movie include discussions about morality, self-acceptance, and fear of the unknown and (staying true to the original comic books) makes comparisons between the Holocaust (a destruction caused by a nuclear war) and how people react to the presence of mutants.

What's the story?

James McAvoy stars as Charles Xavier (Professor X), a powerful telepath who recruits a band of fellow mutants -- each with unique abilities -- in this work to the popular X-Men franchise. After a World War II-era opening sequence, the bulk of the story takes place at the height of the Cold War in the early 1960s, as Xavier joins with another powerful mutant, Erik Lehnsherr (Magneto) (Michael Fassbender), to track down the dangerous Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon). Shaw and his gang are trying to kick off a nuclear disaster, while Xavier and the newly formed X-Men (including Xavier's childhood friend/foster sister, Raven/Mystique, who's played by Jennifer Lawrence) try to prevent World War III. Meanwhile, Erik may be pursuing his own agenda.

  

Is it any good?

Although X-MEN: FIRST CLASS isn't perfect -- it's a bit too long, some scene transitions are sudden and unexpected, and the dialogue has its bumpy moments -- it's more fun to focus on what's right. The brilliant casting, for starters, especially when it comes to McAvoy and Fassbender. Compared to the others, they're practically conducting a master class in the art of acting, regardless of the movie's otherwordly plotlines.

And the story is both an exciting action yarn and a weighty debate about racism, deliberate and good vs. evil. By explicitly linking the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany (Erik is a concentration camp survivor) with ordinary folks' growing fear of mutants -- a theme that has always been part of the X-Men story, from the comic books' earliest days -- the film asks whether the heroes actually have a duty to protect the world. Parts of that debate can get heavy-handed, but it does help elevate the X-Men films beyond standard superhero stories.

What families can talk about

• Families can talk about the movie's messages. What do the mutants' struggles have in common with other challenges that people have faced? Why do people tend to fear what is different?
• What does the movie say about revenge? Is Erik justified in his pursuit of vengeance? Do the ends ever justify the means?
• What distinguishes the "good guys" and the "bad guys" in this movie? Do any of Shaw's arguments make sense?
